The Design District is part of the Greenwich Peninsula Masterplan and is a vibrant cluster of 16 new buildings for the creative industries at the heart of Greenwich Peninsula. It is designed as a “piece of city”, with a distinctive street grain, architecture, and urban character. The district comprises 16 free-standing buildings composed around five courtyards. Located in south-east London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the 56 ha site is one of the largest housing opportunities within London, delivering up to 15,000 homes through high density development.

Plan to shape the future development of Mayfair; influencing planning decisions and how the buildings, streetscapes and public spaces will look and work. The impact of Crossrail opening, new retail formats will likely develop in response to the growth of online shopping, business space requirements will be change and the homes will evolve and respond to advances in technology and increased lifespan, whilst the decline of fossil fuel driven vehicles will continue until they disappear. The Plan includes the introduction of a local high street along the path of the Tyburn River and a narrowing of the lanes to Park Lane to allow for a widening of the public realm.

A masterplan for 880 new homes and new commercial and community spaces on the site of the 1964 housing development. The regeneration is expected to re-provide the site’s existing 316 council homes and include a minimum of 40 per cent affordable new units.

HNNA are working in collaboration with AHMM, BBUK, Gerald Eve, Elliott Wood, Atelier Ten, Coffey Architects and BHA to deliver the masterplan.

Area-wide vision for the town and associated landscape of Thamesmead, London. The study involves an extensive analysis of existing urban conditions, and proposals for new and existing developments across Thamesmead. Outputs include a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), providing an area-wide spatial framework and key principles guiding all future development.

London Boroughs of Bexley & Greenwich, Design for London [ 0709 ]

Modelled on the hugely successful New York High Line the Camden Highline utilises abandoned railway structures to create a new public park and garden walk, transforming the elevated railway between Camden Town and King’s Cross into a green artery for London. The Highline will be open and free to all and punctuated with seating areas, cafés, arts and cultural interventions and spaces for charitable activities, to further enhance the individuality of the experience and help promote social cohesion.

HNNA worked in collaboration with architects Allies and Morrison, O'Donnell and Tuomey and Arquitecturia on the winning masterplan for the new 7 hectare, £1.3 billion cultural quarter at London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on the Stratford waterfront. The masterplan includes residential buildings, outposts for the V&A museum and Sadler's Wells Theatre, and new campuses for the London College of Fashion and University College London.

Alteration and further development of an existing masterplan. The study includes reconfiguring building heights and placements, calculation of dwelling unit types and densities, and resolution of parking and access configurations.

A development study for the historic Town Hall precinct in East Ham, London. The study area takes in a number of listed buildings over two city blocks, including the Town Hall, Old Technical College, Town Hall Annexe, and Old Gym. Radically, the study proposes a new civic space parallel to Barking Road which works to group the historic buildings and focus new development. Indicative companion housing projects are also proposed. Whilst achieving required yields and meeting London Plan and Local Plan constraints, the proposed buildings maintain a dynamism and strong urban quality.

As the site is surrounded by established residential streets, contains existing mixed uses, and engages two Conservation Areas, the development options proposed strike a complex balance between market expectations and planning constraints.

The project includes a large complex of buildings in addition to the parliamentary chambers, and a masterplan for the adjacent part of the city. The scheme is approached as urban design and not as one architectural object, with the majority of the complex formed as a pattern of streets (indoor and outdoor) green courtyards, key landmark buildings, and plazas.

An environmentally friendly light industrial and residential neighbourhood between the Murr river and Wilhelmstraße / Fabrikstraße / Untere Au. The 16.7ha site will feature innovative new mixed housing solutions together with educational and cultural facilities with resilient buildings, structures, processes and formats that work for different future approaches to living.

The guiding principles for the site are utilisation of the sun, maximisation of existing and new natural environments, ease of movement across and within the site deprioritising the car and integrated, sustainable, low carbon, whole life energy use and reduction.

The project will serve as a showcase for the International Building Exhibition 2027.

The City of Backnang [2002]

Major regeneration scheme for the holy town of Kadhimiya, Iraq. Inspired by the morphology and poetics of the Baghdadi house, the design successfully resolves a complex matrix of religious, infrastructure, and conservation demands. The masterplan protects Kadhimiya’s rich architectural and urban legacy via the strategic insertion of new elements and allocating large floor-plate programme to vacant land west of the Shrine centre. A ‘necklace’ of new local centres carry regeneration and services deep into existing communities.

Winning international competition scheme for the Iraq government and UN-HABITAT (United Nations Agency for Human Settlements). A fully integrated settlement for 3000 people is proposed including schools, markets, health centres, and a variety of green spaces and playing fields. Building designs are low cost, architecturally advanced, use local resources, and have sustainability ratings rivalling western standards. Novel approaches to vehicle parking and circulation allow a safe, fully pedestrian landscaped centre.

Assessment of urban characteristics of Dacorum’s towns and villages to guide urban design policies in the Council’s new LDF. The assessment makes a rigorous analysis across an array of criteria ranging from heights, densities, and setbacks, to materials/textures and street-scape elements. A series of specially selected sites were tested across the Borough for their capacity to absorb further housing. Particular account was taken of the Dacorum Urban Design Assessment in order to determine appropriate massing and plot configurations for new development. The findings of the study were used to extrapolate estimates for housing capacity for the wider Borough. The project included training of Dacorum BC planning officers with the new recommendations.
